Filming in Terego. Terego District is a newly established district in the West Nile part of the Northern Region of Uganda. The district comprises of six sub-counties: Aii-Vu, Bileafe, Katrini, Odupi, Omugo, Uriama and 39 parishes. The administrative headquarters of Terego District is Leju trading centre in Aii-Vu sub-county (The Independent, 2020). Terego district hosts significant refugee populations in Imvepi Refugee settlement (Odupi sub-county) and Rhino Refugee Settlement, which stretches over parts of Odupi, Omugo, and Uriama sub-counties and extends into Madi-Okollo District.
According to population projections of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), the non-refugee population of Terego District for 2020 was estimated at 233,300 people (UBOS, 2019).
The scope of this report includes the non-refugee host communities of Terego district and the refugee populations of Imvepi and Rhino refugee settlements. For Rhino refugee settlement, the population figure was reduced by the refugee communities living in settlement pocket located in Rigbo sub-county (Madi-Okollo District). As a result, the total population covered by this report is 394,319.
The district can be characterized as rural. The main economic activity among both the host and refugee communities is some form of agriculture, mainly crop cultivation at subsistence scale (ILO, 2020).
Filming Imvepi Refugee settlement.
Imvepi refugee settlement is located in the newly established Terego District in the West Nile part of the Northern Region of Uganda. Imvepi settlement is located in Odupi sub-county and was opened in February 2017 and currently hosts 67,439 refugees of which the vast majority are from South Sudan (UNHCR, 2020c). The non-refugee population of Odupi sub-county (host-community population) was estimated to be 45,300 (UBOS, 2019). For the scope of this report, we assume a total population of 112,739, of which around 60% are refugees, and 40% are non-refugee host community population. Imvepi Refugee Settlement is located in north western Uganda. In December 2021, the total settlement population was 72,872 with refugees primarily from South Sudan.
Filming in Rhino Refugee Settlement.
Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement is in the North Western Uganda in Terego. This camp hosts 130,000 refugees due to its proximity to three major humanitarian emergencies in South Sudan, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), its progressive refugee hosting and settlement policies, and the ease of border crossings, Uganda has received a large number of refugees over the past 3 years. With over 1 million refugees in Uganda, humanitarian needs across the country are significant with little capacity for actors to clearly map the landscape of needs across refugee and host communities alike. UNHCR, with support from REACH, conducted a Multi-Sector Needs Assessment with the aim to address this information gap by providing evidence-based analysis to inform the Refugee Response Plan (RRP) for 2019-2020.
Necessary requirements to film in Terego.
Filming in Terego. It will require you to get a filming permit when filming in locations and these permits are issued by the respective authorities and management. For one to film in the national parks, you will need to get permission from Uganda wildlife authority. In order to get a Filming Permit, one must write a letter requesting the permit and fill out an application form which is accompanied by a copy of the screenplay, a story synopsis, and a shooting schedule. These are then sent to the respective authorities. Media Accreditation
All members of the crew are supposed to be accredited by the Uganda media council to be able to film in the country. Media accreditation is a must for all applications to make feature films or documentaries. Each crew member is required to fill Form G with all details, scan and send it back to us with a copy of his/her passport as well as one photograph to be put on his/her media card and work IDs. On top of this, we will need a letter from the filming company detailing who they are, why they are filming, where they will be filming and details of crew members on this shoot. Crew members will also be required to seek for letters of Good conduct from Interpol (it’s a must have). We will attach this to all details provided and send them to Uganda Media Council for Media card processing and follow it up. This takes about 2-3 working days
Custom clearing.
Uganda is not a member of the Carnet Free Systems Unions, so Carnet’s are not valid. The only process to get your equipment in and out of Uganda is through a bonded Agent. A comprehensive list of equipment and value needs to be submitted to URA through a bonded clearing agent for the issuance of a Temporary Import Permit (TIP). A fee equivalent to 10% percentage of the value of the equipment is payable. This fee is non-refundable but will guarantee you safe entry and exist with your equipment. We are able to handle clearing for you as we have a trusted bond agent. On the other hand, you can choose to source gear and equipment from the country to avoid the hustle of clearing. Visa Advice
